10 reasons to visit

Järvamaa is the heart of Estonia—a place where nature, history, and local life converge. Whether it’s a day trip or a weekend getaway, there is always something to discover here. We have selected ten reasons why Järvamaa deserves to be your next travel destination.

Ten good reasons

1

Kakerdaja bog — vastness and silence

One of Estonia’s most beautiful bogs features a 4-kilometer-long boardwalk that winds through bog pools and stunted pines. From the viewing platform, you can take in the entire bog—an ideal spot for a bit of soul-soothing or for photography enthusiasts.

2

Vargamäe — a place where literature lives

At the birthplace of A. H. Tammsaare’s *Truth and Justice*, you can step inside a traditional Estonian farm dwelling and listen to audio stories along six literary trails. The landscape has changed, but the people have not—the story of Krõõt and Andres still resonates today.

3

Paide rampart— the Middle Ages at your heart

The symbol of Paide is an octagonal tower, reconstructed on the site of a medieval Order castle, which houses the Järvamaa Museum. The tower offers a panoramic view of the town and its old town.

4

Manors and energy sites

Kirna Manor is one of Estonia’s best-known energy sites, where the park and main building offer peace and a unique atmosphere. The Roosna-Alliku manor complex catches the eye with its Classicist architecture and expansive parks.

5

Local food — rivers of milk and mountains of porridge

Järvamaa is Estonia’s land of plenty—a region of "rivers of milk and mountains of porridge." From Seidla bread, *karask* (traditional barley bread), and *pokteil* to various cheeses, the local cuisine places high value on raw ingredients and age-old traditions. Over twenty dining establishments in the area have received recognition from Falstaff 2025.

6

Sauna culture — fire, whisks, and silence

An authentic smoke sauna in the middle of an old spruce forest, a lakeside sauna from which you can jump straight into the water, and an igloo sauna on a snowy winter night—Järvamaa offers saunas to suit every taste. A sauna is not just a place for washing; it is a place for gathering experiences.

7

Green Destination — Platinum 2026

Järvamaa belongs to the international Green Destinations network and received platinum-level recognition in 2026, skipping the gold level. For four consecutive years, Järvamaa was selected for the list of the world’s Top 100 sustainable destinations.

8

Valgehobusemägi — year-round experiences

The highest hill in Järva County is a popular ski center in winter and a destination for hikers in summer. The hill offers an expansive view of the Pandivere Upland. A café and hiking trails make it a suitable destination for an entire day.

9

Toosikannu Wildlife Park — a family-friendly adventure

In Estonia’s largest wildlife park, you can see both domestic and wild animals in a natural-like environment. Next to the park, there is an accommodation and seminar center, a children’s area, and hiking trails—offering a full day of activities for the whole family.
